A broken tooth or a sudden abscess doesn’t wait for a convenient appointment, and it doesn’t care which side of Central Park you live on. Dental West NYC is at Central Park West near Columbus Circle, reachable from the Upper East Side by the 66th, 79th, or 96th Street transverse — the M66, M79, and M96 buses run those routes directly, connecting to the 1, A, B, and C trains near our office. If you’re in pain right now, call first so we can tell you what to do before you travel.
Is This a Dental Emergency?
- Severe or throbbing tooth pain — especially pain that’s worsening, keeping you up at night, or accompanied by swelling.
- Knocked-out or fully displaced tooth — time matters here; call while you’re on your way.
- Cracked, chipped, or broken tooth — particularly if there’s pain, a sharp edge, or visible nerve exposure.
- Facial or gum swelling — a sign of possible infection or abscess that needs prompt evaluation.
- Lost filling or crown — not always urgent, but painful or sharp cases should be seen quickly.
- Uncontrolled bleeding in the mouth — after an injury, or bleeding that won’t stop with gentle pressure.
Call Us or Go to the ER?
First Steps Before You Arrive
- Knocked-out tooth: handle it by the crown (not the root), rinse gently if dirty, and try to keep it moist — in a cup of milk or held in place — until you’re seen.
- Severe toothache: rinse with warm water, and a cold compress on the outside of the cheek can help with swelling. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum.
- Cracked or chipped tooth: save any pieces if possible, rinse your mouth gently, and avoid chewing on that side.
- Lost filling or crown: keep the piece if you have it, and avoid very hot, cold, or sticky foods until you’re seen.
- Bleeding after an injury: apply firm, steady pressure with clean gauze and call us right away.
What Happens During Your Visit
You’ll be seen by Dr. Walter, who examines the tooth or area, takes imaging only if it’s clinically necessary to diagnose the problem, and explains what’s happening and what the options are — in plain terms, before any treatment starts. Because Dental West NYC is fee-for-service and out-of-network with all insurance and PPO plans, we give you a clear itemized estimate up front rather than treating around what a network will or won’t approve, and we prepare the paperwork so you can pursue out-of-network reimbursement afterward. There’s no answering service standing between you and the dentist — if it’s urgent, you’re talking to the practice that’s actually going to treat you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a same-day emergency appointment?
Call us as soon as the problem starts. We prioritize dental emergencies and do our best to see urgent cases the same day.
Do you treat dental emergencies for children, or only adults?
Dental West NYC’s regular practice is built around adult preventive, restorative, and cosmetic care, but we do treat dental emergencies for patients of all ages. Call first and we’ll tell you how best to proceed.
What if I don’t have dental insurance, or my plan is out-of-network here?
Dental West NYC is fee-for-service and out-of-network with all insurance plans, including PPO and concierge medical memberships. You get a clear itemized estimate before treatment, and we prepare the claim for you to submit for out-of-network reimbursement.
My gums are swollen and bleeding — is that an emergency?
It can be a sign of active gum disease or infection that needs prompt evaluation. If there’s significant swelling, pain, or fever, call us right away. Ongoing gum disease itself is treated through our gum disease treatment services.
Will you take x-rays for every emergency visit?
Only when they’re clinically necessary to diagnose the problem, consistent with current ADA guidance on x-ray use — not as an automatic step for every visit.
How do I get to your office from the Upper East Side quickly?
Take the 66th, 79th, or 96th Street transverse across Central Park — the M66, M79, or M96 bus runs that route directly to Central Park West, near our office and the 1, A, B, and C trains.
