Dr. Leora Walter is a surgically trained prosthodontist at Dental West on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. She is one of a handful of elite dentists highly trained in both restorative and cosmetic procedures as well as in surgical implant dentistry. The additional fellowships that Dr. Walter has completed have helped her hone her practice philosophy of minimally-invasive and preventive dentistry using the most advanced technology available.
Dr. Walter teaches her craft to general dentists at Woodhull Medical Center, where she is the Course Director of Prosthodontics and a Clinical Attending. She stays up-to-date with current literature and contributes to both medical and dental journals. Dr. Walter is a nationally and internationally recognized lecturer, teaching other dentists and specialists.

- Awards and scholarships: NIH Fogarty International Clinical Research Scholarship, Peru; International Center for AIDS Care and Treatment Program Scholarship (ICAP), Ethiopia; Quintessence Award for Research Achievement; and the American Academy of Implant Dentistry Award.

- Research: Dr. Walters has authored five papers in the span of her career, including two on zygomatic implants, one on the prosthodontic concept of AP (anterior-posterior) spread, and two on the prevalence of HPV in healthy adults in Lima, Peru, where she lived for a year to conduct on the ground research.

General Dentist
As a general dentist, Dr. Walter focuses on prevention as the key to maintaining dental health throughout life. Her exams are attentive to all parts of the head and neck region while focusing on teeth and gums for maximum dental health. The mouth is the passageway to the body and should be treated with care and delicacy.
Dr. Walter’s general dental work is minimally invasive, preferring to do as little as possible before moving on to bigger treatments. She keeps fillings and restorations as small so there is tooth structure in the event that the tooth needs dental care later in life. Restorative Dentist and Prosthodontist
As a prosthodontist, Dr. Walter is trained in providing more extensive care for those patients who require it. Prosthodontics is thea dental specialty focused on the design, manufacture, and fitting of artificial replacements for teeth and other parts of the mouth. This can include the use of dentures, bridges, crowns, and dental implants to restore and enhance your teeth’s natural oral functionality, fit appearance, and overall health. Prosthodontists undergo an additional 3 years of training beyond general dentistry to specialize in complex cases requiring rehabilitation and in the integration of artificial devices into patients’ oral structures.
She treats patients whose dental work is starting to deteriorate as well as patients who have experienced a trauma such as a fall, abuse, or a medical condition that renders standard treatment difficult. She provides tailored treatments to each patient to help them smile and function again.
Family Dentist
As a mother, Dr. Walter is aware of the dental problems and gum discomfort that many expecting parents experience. As such, she makes sure that pregnant patients get their gums checked and cleaned with more frequency. This ensures not only the health of mom, but of the baby as well.
Dr. Walter is skilled in providing non-invasive treatments for adolescents (and adults) who are not yet ready for more definitive treatment.
