Your dentist recommends X-rays, and the first thing that crosses your mind might be: Do I really need these? It’s a fair question, and the answer depends entirely on what your mouth actually needs, not what a checklist says.

At Dental West NYC, X-rays are taken only when they will genuinely change, inform, or confirm your care. That’s a deliberate choice, and it’s one that sets our exams and laser cleanings apart from the routine approach you’ll find at most insurance-driven offices.

What Dental X-Rays Can Reveal

Dental X-rays are one of the most valuable diagnostic tools available, precisely because they show what a clinical exam cannot. Issues that are invisible to the naked eye become clear on an X-ray, allowing your dentist to act before small concerns turn into larger ones.

What We’re Looking For

A well-timed X-ray gives your dentist a complete picture of your oral health below the surface. There’s a reason we use the word “diagnostic” rather than “routine” when talking about imaging. Some of the most important findings include:

  • Cavities between teeth: Decay that develops in the contact areas between teeth is virtually undetectable without imaging, even during a thorough clinical exam.
  • Bone loss: Changes in bone density around teeth or implants can signal early-stage periodontal disease that has yet to show visible symptoms.
  • Infections: Abscesses or cysts forming at the root of a tooth often cause no discomfort in their early stages, but show up clearly on X-ray.
  • Impacted teeth: Wisdom teeth and other teeth that haven’t fully erupted can affect neighboring teeth in ways that only imaging will reveal.
  • Root issues: Cracks, fractures, or unusual root morphology that affect treatment decisions are identified through imaging.

These findings don’t just inform a diagnosis. They shape the entire treatment conversation.

How We Approach X-Ray Frequency

Most dental offices take X-rays on a yearly basis, largely because that’s what insurance covers. At Dental West NYC, we take a different view. Our patients typically receive X-rays every two to two and a half years, or as their specific clinical picture warrants.

New patients are encouraged to bring in any recent X-rays from their previous dentist. We don’t automatically take a full set of images just because someone is new to the practice. If your last set of X-rays is recent and your exam is unremarkable, there’s no clinical justification for repeating them. That decision belongs to your clinical picture, not a billing cycle.

For patients with a higher cavity rate or active periodontal concerns, we do image more frequently because their situation calls for it. The frequency is always tied to the individual. Our advanced dental technology makes this process precise, comfortable, and as low-exposure as possible.

Digital X-Rays and Radiation Safety

One of the first upgrades Dr. Leora Walter made when she took over the practice was switching to fully digital X-ray technology. The difference in radiation exposure compared to traditional film is significant, and the image quality is meaningfully better, producing sharper diagnostic detail with far less exposure.

The American Dental Association confirms that radiation exposure from dental imaging is a minor contribution to total exposure from all sources, and that in some cases, a single dental X-ray delivers less radiation than a day of natural background radiation. The 2024 ADA update also confirmed that lead abdominal aprons and thyroid collars are no longer recommended during digital X-rays because exposure levels are so low. This is the modern standard, and it’s the standard we hold ourselves to.

For patients who have long harbored concerns about X-ray safety, particularly those with memories of being wrapped in a lead apron at the dentist decades ago, the landscape has changed substantially. The diagnostic value of what a well-timed X-ray reveals far outweighs any exposure concern when modern digital equipment is used correctly.

X-Rays and Your Periodontal Health

One of the most important reasons we take X-rays at Dental West NYC is to monitor bone levels around your teeth over time. Periodontal disease often progresses silently, and bone loss can occur before a patient notices any symptoms. X-rays allow us to track changes between visits and catch deterioration early, before it becomes a structural problem.

Every patient at Dental West NYC receives a periodontal exam as part of their checkup and cleaning visit. X-rays that show bone levels are part of that picture. For patients managing active gum disease or those in the maintenance phase following treatment, imaging is a meaningful part of how we track progress. The same philosophy applies to our oral cancer screenings, where imaging can sometimes reveal pathology in areas that a visual exam alone wouldn’t catch.

Choose a Practice That Images with Purpose

Dental X-rays should be a clinical decision, not a calendar event. At Dental West NYC, Dr. Walter and our team take X-rays when your care genuinely calls for them, and not simply because a year has passed or because your insurance covers them. That distinction matters.

As a fee-for-service prosthodontic practice on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, we are not guided by what insurance will reimburse. We are guided by what your mouth actually needs. Dr. Walter completed her prosthodontic residency training at New York University and brings a comprehensive, whole-patient perspective to every diagnostic decision she makes.
