Doctor points to filled root canal in dental x-ray

Our Upper West Side practice focuses on preserving your natural teeth through conservative, evidence-based treatment rather than following insurance-driven protocols. We take X-rays only when medically necessary, use advanced laser technology, and make recommendations based on what you actually need.

At Dental West NYC, we operate differently from most dental practices you’ve visited. Our fee-for-service model means we’re not limited by what insurance companies prefer to cover, giving us the freedom to provide the care that’s truly best for your long-term oral health.

We Take X-Rays Only When Needed

Many dental practices take X-rays yearly because that’s what insurance covers. We take a different approach. Your first visit includes complementary X-rays, so that we have the most up-to-date image of what is happening in the patient’s mouth. After that, they are taken when medically necessary.

Digital X-rays emit minimal radiation compared to older technology. In February 2024, the American Dental Association released guidance stating that lead shields are no longer necessary due to how low the radiation exposure has become. The diagnostic information we gain from X-rays far outweighs any minimal risk, but that doesn’t mean we should take them when they’re not medically indicated.

This conservative approach to imaging reflects our overall philosophy. We don’t recommend treatments prematurely or maximizing procedures based on insurance coverage. If you don’t need an X-ray yet, we won’t take one. If you do need one, we’ll explain exactly why and what we’re looking for.

What Fee-for-Service Means for You

Insurance-based practices often maximize procedures that insurance covers, taking yearly X-rays whether needed or not, recommending treatments that might be premature, and potentially overlooking preventive approaches that could save your natural teeth. We don’t operate that way.

Fee-for-service means we’re accountable to you, not to insurance companies. We base our recommendations on current research, clinical evidence, and what’s actually happening in your mouth. If a conservative approach makes sense, we’ll recommend it even if a more aggressive treatment would be more profitable. If you need advanced technology like laser treatment, we can provide it without insurance restrictions limiting your options.

This model also means we take time with each patient. We’re not rushing through appointments to meet quotas or maximize insurance reimbursements. We explain your options thoroughly, answer your questions, and involve you in treatment decisions. You’re a partner in your care, not just a patient moving through a system.

Advanced Laser Technology for Conservative Treatment

We use the PerioLase MVP-7 laser for both preventive care and treatment of gum disease. This laser technology has been available since the 1990s, but many practices haven’t adopted it due to cost. We’ve made this investment because the results speak for themselves.

The laser allows us to treat gum disease without cutting or suturing, preserving more of your natural tissue. It’s the only FDA-approved device capable of regenerating bone lost to periodontal disease. During routine cleanings, we can use the laser to eliminate bacteria in patients prone to cavities or those showing early signs of gum problems. This preventive approach often stops issues before they require more invasive treatment.

For patients with moderate to severe gum disease, the laser provides an alternative to traditional surgery. Recovery is faster, discomfort is minimal, and outcomes are often better than conventional approaches. This technology exemplifies our commitment to conservative, evidence-based care that preserves your natural teeth and gums.

Prosthodontic Training Makes a Difference

Dr. Leora Walter completed advanced training in prosthodontics, a dental specialty focused on restoring and replacing teeth. This additional education means she approaches problems differently than general dentists. Prosthodontists spend extra years learning how to save compromised teeth, plan complex restorations, and ensure long-term function and aesthetics.

This training influences every aspect of care in our practice. When you have a problem tooth, we explore all options for saving it before considering extraction. We look at how individual teeth function as part of your whole bite, not in isolation. This comprehensive approach leads to better long-term outcomes because we’re thinking several steps ahead.

Dr. Michelle Kamel brings additional depth to our team with her advanced training in periodontics and implant dentistry from NYU College of Dentistry, where she graduated with honors. Her background in periodontics means we can handle complex gum and bone issues in-house rather than referring you elsewhere for care.
