Many patients worry about dental x-rays, and it’s easy to understand why. Images of lead aprons and concerns about radiation exposure have created lasting anxiety around this common diagnostic tool. However, the reality of modern digital x-rays is quite different from what many people imagine, and the outdated fears from decades past no longer apply to today’s technology.

At Dental West NYC, we take x-rays only when they provide essential diagnostic information you can’t get any other way. We don’t follow a rigid yearly schedule just because that’s what many practices do. Instead, we evaluate each patient individually and take x-rays based on actual clinical need, typically every two to two and a half years for most patients.

Understanding Digital X-Ray Technology

Digital x-rays represent a significant advancement over the film x-rays used in previous decades. The radiation exposure from modern digital x-rays is remarkably low, producing up to 90% less radiation than traditional film x-rays. To put this in perspective, the amount of radiation you receive from a full set of dental x-rays is less than what you’re naturally exposed to in a single day from the sun and your environment.

The technology has improved so dramatically that in February 2024, the American Dental Association released a statement confirming that lead shields are no longer required when using digital x-rays. The radiation levels are so minimal that the diagnostic benefits far outweigh any negligible risk. The idea that x-rays might cause serious harm comes from the 1970s and 1980s when equipment and techniques were very different from what we use today.

Our Conservative Approach to X-Rays

Most dental practices take x-rays on a yearly schedule, but we believe this approach often leads to unnecessary imaging. We typically take x-rays every two to two and a half years for patients with healthy mouths, adjusting this timeline based on individual risk factors and clinical findings. This conservative approach means you receive imaging only when it provides meaningful information about your oral health.

For new patients, we ask you to bring your previous x-rays from your former dentist whenever possible. This practice prevents redundant imaging and allows us to review your dental history without exposing you to additional radiation. We don’t automatically take x-rays just because you’re new to our practice. Instead, we review your existing images and determine whether new x-rays are clinically necessary based on how recent they are and what information we need.

When X-Rays Are Medically Necessary

Certain situations require x-rays to provide safe and effective care. When you have symptoms like pain, swelling, or sensitivity, x-rays help us identify the source of the problem, whether it’s decay between teeth, infection at the root, or bone loss. These issues often develop in areas we can’t see during a visual examination, making imaging essential for accurate diagnosis.

X-rays also play a critical role in treatment planning for procedures like dental implants, root canals, or tooth extractions. They reveal bone density, root structure, and the position of nerves and sinuses, information that’s vital for performing these procedures safely. In these cases, the diagnostic value of x-rays clearly justifies their use.

The Value of Informed Diagnostic Decisions

The digital x-rays we use today provide exceptional image quality with minimal radiation exposure. When we do recommend x-rays, it’s because the information they provide is essential for your care and can’t be obtained through other means. This might include detecting early decay, assessing bone health around teeth, or monitoring the development of wisdom teeth.

We understand that some patients have been told by previous dentists that they need x-rays every single visit or every year without exception. This one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t account for individual circumstances or actual clinical need. By taking a more personalized approach, we ensure you receive appropriate diagnostic care without unnecessary procedures.
